Of course having a bounty on your head and accidentally putting out loud mental calls for help to who knows who but they're coming!
Magical Midlife Dating allowed us to further descend into Jessie's crazy new world full of creepy rolling doll heads, butlers who rename themselves ridiculous names, and insanely hot men. I can't get enough of any of these characters. They are all so real I feels like they are flesh and blood. I have never found another author who can make /5. Magical Midlife Dating is the second book in K.F. Breene's Levelling Up series (if you haven't already read Magical Midlife Madness I'd highly recommend reading that book first) and it was another fun instalment. I really love main character Jessie, at 40 she's older than a lot heroines and because of that she's confident in her own skin and knows what she wants from life/5. Jan 24, But, of course, dating in midlife comes with more issues than finding someone with similar interests. Sam Owen is a therapist specialising in dating Author: Miranda Levy.
Doesn't help either. I laughed, a lot. Got a lot of funny looks from my coworkers for that. I listened to the audiobook. My heart raced at moments and all in all, seriously enjoyed the ride. Aug 14, Snarktastic Sonja rated it really liked it. I had a hard time getting into this one. Why, I wailed to myself, why does this have to read like a "middle" book. I didn't want Jessie to date.
Somewhere about the 3rd chapter, I found myself really not caring if this was a "middle" book, or just more on the adventure. The characters created in this series are an absolute riot and I laughed all the way through, from the gargoyle Earl who insists he is now Mr. Tomto the loo I had a hard time getting into this one. Are they over the top?
But, they are drawn so creatively and so well that I just do not care. Or maybe the over the topness is what makes me love them. And, poor Jessie - just trying to keep sane when dealing with not only her nutty caretakers but the house that keeps wanting to use creepy dolls to save the day. We couldn't actually get to the finale we are all hoping comes without the growth that happens here.
While I could have done without the misdirecting arrival of a hunk of a gargoyle to set up a stupid love triangle, at least it was over quickly. Though, I suspect we may not have seen the last of it. Ultimately, this book isn't about Jessie at all. She knows where she is and what she is doing. She is trying to learn her magic and make her way through this new world she has been thrust into. This book is about Austin, who knows what he is and what he should be but not how to get there.
Jessie, with some help from her crazy cadre, shows him the way, and he arrives safely. OK, he at least arrives. They are not just filler pages to get from beginning to end.
And, the ride is quite enjoyable. Only 4 stars. Because - yea I could have done with the "romance" scene. View 1 comment. Aug 14, Lisa rated it it was amazing. K f Breene amazing quality and craziness The first was absolutely hilarious but this one was a bit more serious The first book managed to have an insane amount of humour, so it fit perfectly into the flow.

She spent her whole life not knowing that supernatural creatures were real so she's been really thrown in at the deep end by her move to a small town full of shapeshifters, vampires, gargoyles and more.
Since taking over running Ivy House and inheriting her own magical powers Jessie has had a steep learning curve and knowing that she has dangerous enemies closing in means she needs to level up her abilities fast if she wants to be able to protect herself and the people she's coming to care about. This series has been so much fun to read so far.
The characters living in and around Ivy House are totally bonkers in the best kind of ways and I really enjoy the group banter and watching Jessie figure out how to reign in everyone's crazy impulses. I also really love the friendship between her and the town alpha, polar bear shifter Austin, I have high hopes for those two if Austin is ever willing to admit his feelings.
This story sees an influx of gargoyles who arrive ready and willing to help Jessie learn to harness her magic, some I like more than others but it was definitely fun seeing them try to sort out their places in the hierarchy.
Dating is an adventure at any age - nerve-racking, exhausting, crushing and occasionally wonderful - but maybe even more so in midlife. The stakes are higher, whether you're looking for a.
These books are really fun and easy reads and I can't wait to continue the series. Jul 31, Heather Rainwater-Alvarado rated it it was amazing. I sincerely applaud her for facing midlife dating head on without candy-coating anything. As a reader, you get sucked in easily and begin empathizing with Jessie on a whole other level. The hilarity of Jesse attempting and failing at online dating is epic and enthralling.
The danger of being captured by other competing powerhouses is slow-building and takes a backseat to the dating for much of the book.
The two plots somewhat conflict at times in the beginning before resolving into a cohesive story by the end.

And there may even be losses along the way. Even the main established characters encounter twists in their abilities making everything new and exciting. I never thought even the main characters would have new twists, which makes me even more excited for the next book in the series.
The main conflict certainly wraps up, but a new hook is set making you want the next book as soon as possible. Apr 13, Nancy A. Musgrove rated it really liked it. Totally fun! Kick-ass characters with laugh out loud dialogue.

I tried to pace myself with this one but it was too good to put down! Aug 16, Kelly rated it really liked it Shelves: ku-primeurban-fantasyebooksread-in Jessie's working on uncovering new facets of her magic and the magic of Ivy House and doesn't THAT come with a few surprises?!?! I'm going to say she's not quite in the right headspace yet.
She understands what she needs to do, but she doesn't quite see herself as the person capable of doing it. Impostor syndrome. Number 1 on her to-do list is finding her wings and learning to fly.
And she's not doing so great at that one. She's called a horde of gargoyles to her Jessie's working on uncovering new facets of her magic and the magic of Ivy House and doesn't THAT come with a few surprises?!?! She's called a horde of gargoyles to her to supplement the current trio helping her out and things are getting interesting.
Interesting and innuendo laden. Because gargoyles aren't very inhibited and they like slinging the innuendo. Townside, Austin is still fighting the pull Ivy House is putting out and that's putting a bit of a strain of Jessie.
Because he's still her 1 pick to stand by her side, but she won't force him into a position he doesn't want. The guy has some commitment issues, doesn't he? He won't commit to being the town Alpha even though he clearly is and he doesn't want to get dragged into Ivy House's craziness. Which, given that Jessie is part of Ivy house now, seems like a battle he isn't going to win.
Opinion you midlife dating congratulate, what
Being a former non-magical person thrust into the world of magic is already sending Jessie's head spinning. Internet dating? Aug 21, k reads rated it it was ok Shelves: read Magical Midlife Dating is not just a middle-aged fantasy, it is a middle-aged mom fantasy.
While there is nothing wrong with that, I don't really relate but I could totally see others loving that ct. As a middle-aged woman, I found the well, not so much love as sex interest annoying. Damarion is a douchebag and the whole possible relationship was absurd. If she was a middle-aged dude acting that way, it would creep me the fuck out.
The pacing seemed off, not just in this book but in the overall arc of the story. I wish more happened and I wish Jessie was more proactive. Things seem to meander along and the conflicts felt contrived. About halfway through, I thought about giving up. I powered through anyway and it got better. If we are still quarantining when it comes out, then probably.

This series is so dang fun. But it is a minor quibble, honestly. Across the board I just had serious fun. In the next book, I really hope Austin decides to either shit or get off the pot, though. Interesting twist This book is the 2nd in this series. I can't get enough of Jessie and her band of misfits. She is everything. I think this book was a fun read. The added new comers was great. I see her circle is going to be a sight once built. Look forward to reading more.
Aug 14, Kristine rated it really liked it. I was so excited to see that this book was available. I really, really have enjoyed this series. For some reason though, I had a bit of a problem with Jess' constant inner monologue about her age - my goodness, she is in her 40's - she's not THAT old.
That and the fact that she seemed to go on and on about women and their roles in relation to men. I'm not sure why it didn't bother me in the first book but I noticed it more this time? Oh well, it is what it is - no biggie. Jess is still learning h I was so excited to see that this book was available. Jess is still learning her magic and trying to find her way in this new world. There is a new Alpha guy gargoyle in her life, but really, I spent the entire book waiting for Austin Steele to get his act together.
And boy do we finally get a payoff. The characters in this series crack me up. I love the fact that they are so weird, yet the fact that they are weird makes them so freaking likeable : Who knew that being a female gargoyle could be so interesting? Aug 14, Nate Brightman rated it really liked it.
Hopefully having been raised by a single mom who was a Rosie the Riveter during WWII and showed me by example that women are not less than, my own daughters have not been saddled by all of the sexist drivel that Jessie seemed to have been raised to believe.
I gave up on that series after the first book. Like the fact that once Jessie accepted the magic of Ivy House she like its founder became a female gargoyle.
Female gargoyles are rare and possess an incredible amount of magic. Although Breene gradually gets around to filling in enough of the gaps to make this readable as a standalone I can see where a new reader jumping into this series with this book might feel lost.
Jess has been accepted by Ivy House as its rightful heir so has bestowed upon her its magic making her potentially one of the most powerful magical persons in the world. Like they think she can fly if she just jumps from a high window she will sprout wings and fly. So Jess sends out a magical distress signal felt throughout the magic world summoning those who could help her learn to wield her magic.
From among this group she is also expected to chose a total of twelve to serve as her council. She also worries that her call for help could attract a lot of powerful magical people to the small California town Ivy House is located in who could cause trouble for the residents that Austin the leader of the towns magical community will be left to deal with.
She needs someone to serve as her advisor and teach her how to lead. But Austin as much as he cares for Jess does not want to give up his independence and become pledged to serve Ivy House.
